Let’s Move! STL celebrated the third annual Let’s Move! STL FlashMob on May 5, 2017 at Ballpark Village Saint Louis. Approximately 14,000 plus students at elementary and middle schools near St. Louis and around 360 students at Ball Park Village performed Beyonce’s Move Your Body dance, followed by the Gimme Five dance. The Let’sMove! STL Flash Mob was inspired by former First Lady Michelle Obama’s initiative to raise a healthier generation of kids. The flash mob originated in 2014 in collaboration with SLPS, Let’sMove!STL, Missouri Foundation for Health’s Healthy Schools Healthy Communities initiative, and Barnes Jewish/Christian School Outreach and Youth Development to fight childhood obesity. The event is designed to ignite excitement within the students to participate in healthy activities, such as dancing. We had great support in the event this year. DJ Shape and Fred Bird from the Cardinals as well as Louie from the Blues were there to get the students fired up about dancing and being active. Local radio station 100.3 The Beat was also there for a remote shout out. This year we were privileged to receive opening remarks from Missouri Foundation for Health CEO, Bob Hughes and City of St. Louis Department of Health Director, Melba Moore. The students had fun performing both dances multiple times. Before returning back to school, students pledged to practice living healthy lifestyles throughout the summer months and received a Let’s Move! STL water bottle. This event has been successful in stimulating excitement within the students to move their bodies and live healthy lifestyles. We thank all the school personnel who worked so hard to help the students learn the dances and otherwise facilitated their participation in this event. We also thank all the partners who provided support. We look forward to another successful year for the flash mob!
