Spring is in the air and that means it is time for farmer’s markets to open where you can purchase fruit and vegetables and often meat, cheese, and bakery products directly from the farmers who produced them! What are the benefits of shopping at a farmer’s market? First, you support local family farmers. Second, buying directly from the farmer is not only supporting their businesses and families, but also benefits your pocket. Buying local often eliminates the middleman which results in lower prices for these fresh products. Third, purchasing at farmers markets also protects the environment in two ways. Buying local reduces the “travel miles” for the products, cutting down on emissions that pollute the air. Additionally, larger commercial farms that produce fruits and vegetables consume more resources that often pollute the air, water, and lands more than small farms do. Fourth, farmer’s markets also provide seasonal food items. Seasonal items are at their peak for flavor and often their lowest prices. Finally, you can gain some knowledge about the foods you are consuming. Generally, farmers at the market can educate you as the purchaser on where your food comes from, and about the processes he/she takes to produce the food items. They also are a great resource for cooking tips, recipes, and meal ideas. With so many benefits, why not try a farmer’s market today? Check the list below to find the one that is closest to you:
